A guitar technician (or ‘guitar tech’) is a member of a music ensemble’s road crew who maintains and sets up the musical equipment for one or more guitarists during a concert tour. Depending on the type and size of band, the guitar tech may be responsible for stringing, tuning, and adjusting electric guitars and acoustic guitars, and maintaining and setting up guitar amplifiers and other related electronic equipment such as effect pedals.
Once the guitar equipment has been set up onstage, the guitar tech does a soundcheck to ensure that the equipment is working well. If there are any problems, the guitar tech will replace or repair the faulty components or equipment. Since guitar techs need to soundcheck the instruments and amplifiers, they must have basic guitar-playing skills, a musical “ear” for tuning, and a familiarity with the way guitars, amplifiers, and effect pedals are supposed to sound in the style of music of their band.
Guitar techs learn their craft either “on the job”, by working in a range of music, sound engineering, and instrument repair jobs; by completing a guitar repair program at a college or lutherie school; or from a combination of these two routes. The salaries and conditions of work for guitar techs vary widely, depending on whether a guitar tech is working for a minor or regional touring bar band or a major international touring act

There are many factors that contribute to getting the most tone out of your guitar. The easiest way to improve tone is change your strings often. Technique definitely does play an integral part in achieving killer tone but it is just one of many factors. Having a skilled luthier or tech set up your guitar for your style is a big one too. But to be completely honest the true secret is as simple as this. Play good music. Play music that you love and keep your playing true to the music. We as players tend to let our ego’s get in the way of simply playing what sounds good. Just focus on the music and tone will follow. I promise.

The guitar is a plucked string instrument, played either with fingers or a pick. The guitar consists of a body with a rigid neck to which the strings, generally six in number but sometimes more, are attached. Guitars are traditionally constructed of various woods and strung with animal gut or, more recently, with either nylon or steel strings. Some modern guitars are made of polycarbonate materials. Guitars are made and repaired by luthiers. There are two primary families of guitars: acoustic and electric.
Acoustic guitars (and similar instruments) with hollow bodies, have been in use for over a thousand years. There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar. The tone of an acoustic guitar is produced by the vibration of the strings, which is amplified by the body of the guitar, which acts as a resonating chamber. The classical guitar is often played as a solo instrument using a comprehensive fingerpicking technique.
Electric guitars, introduced in the 1930s, rely on an amplifier that can electronically manipulate tone. Early amplified guitars employed a hollow body, but a solid body was found more suitable. Electric guitars have had a continuing profound influence on popular culture. Guitars are recognized as a primary instrument in genres such as blues, bluegrass, country, flamenco, jazz, jota, mariachi, reggae, rock, soul, and many forms of pop.

The craft of lutherie is commonly divided into two main categories: stringed instruments that are plucked or strummed, and those that are bowed.[1] Since bowed instruments require a bow, the second category includes a subtype known as an archetier, a French word meaning one who makes bows.[2] While the division of luthiers into different categories may seem arbitrary, there are those who are passionate about the difference between these branches of the craft.[3][4]

Recently I have been getting a lot of inquiries as to whether or not I do repair work on electric guitars. The quick answer is, yes I do. I have become known for my work on flat top or acoustic guitars because of my affiliation with Taylor Guitars and my many years of service at the Bluegrass shop. I do offer a comprehensive list of services on both electric and acoustic guitars as well as a slew of other stringed instruments. This includes but is not limited to pickup installation, fret work, electronics trouble shooting, pot replacement and re-wiring. If I had to pick an area of focus it would probably be flat tops but that by no means suggests a limited knowledge of electric guitar repair. Anyway, just thought I would post this in an attempt to clear up a few questions that some of you have had. Thanks, and stop back often to see whats new here at my shop!
